Our mission and role
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the world's largest humanitarian organization, providing assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions.

Founded in 1919, the International Federation comprises 176 member Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, a Secretariat in Geneva and more than 60 delegations strategically located to support activities around the world. There are more societies in formation. The Red Crescent is used in place of the Red Cross in many Islamic countries.

Shocked and saddened by the recent attacks in the United States, members of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement are sending an outpouring of compassionate messages, offering to provide volunteers, blood, financial assistance, search and rescue teams and other in-kind donations to support the work of the American Red Cross.


Crisis in the East - Afghan refugees

This page is a link to all the information available from the International Federation regarding its contingency planning and preparedness measures to assist refugees fleeing Afghanistan for fear of military attacks on the country.

The Federation is assisting Red Crescent societies in countries bordering Afghanistan to prepare for population movements in the region. These preparatory measures are aimed at fast and effective alleviation of human suffering. The focus is on providing shelter, clean water, food and health care.
