Campaign 2004 Notes--

Special to Whoseflorida.com

by Jack McCarthy

Closet boy Matt (Mutt) Drudge and radio talk show host and drug kingpin "Rush" (boy is that name apt) Limbaugh, the most despicable right-wing batman and robin act since Joe McCarthy and Roy Cohn are rummaging in other peoples beds again.

Last Thursday Drudge posted one of his trademark "WORLD WIDE EXCLUSIVE" yarns, "templated from the Monica Lewinsky story" as Salon.com's Joe Conason put it.

Mutt claimed that John Kerry's campaign was about implode over a, you guessed it, an affair with an "intern."

Mutt claimed that major news organizations like Time and Newsweek were chasing down the story. Nobody confirmed this, but Mutt was not deterred.

In yet another unsourced story Mutt claimed that Wes Clarks assistant Chris Lehane, formerly with the Gore campaign and once a Kerry operative--before he was fired--was behind the rumor.

More salaciously, Mutt claimed that Wes Clark speaking off the record said in front of five reporters that Kerry's campaign was going to "implode over an intern scandal."

Mutt quoted a memo from MSNBC analyst and former Congressional Quarterly editor, Craig Crawford saying that "Lehane had been peddling this story" for quite some time. Soon after Mutt posted the leaked MSNBC memo, Lehane called MSNBC to deny it. Crawford retracted and Drudge pulled the story.

The European paper the Scotsman reported the woman was not an intern but an AP reporter who was vacationing in Africa (Mutt said she "fled") with her fiancée. The woman's parents denied any affair, but her father said Kerry tried to woo her to work on his campaign. He said he thought Kerry was a "sleaze" but denied anything of the sort Drudge was claiming.

On Friday Kerry was on the Don Imus show and categorically denied the story.

It appears that closet boy Drudge (see David Brock's "Blinded by the Right" for RushDrudgesque titillating story on how closet boy Drudge tried to put the moves on out of the closet Brock) and Pill boy Rush succeeded at the very least in getting Kerry to deny the salacious rumor.

Operation Slime Kerry has begun.
