"Service-First" not just a Tallahassee issue

"We were pleased to see that Gov. Bush's Service First program incorporates many of our proposals," Council (of 100) Chairman Charles Cobb and Vice-chairman Al Hoffman wrote. "This issue is front-page news almost on a daily basis in Tallahassee, but we can assure you that to people elsewhere in Florida, civil service modernization is a non-issue. In fact, everyone we speak with tells us what a great idea it is to model the state workforce more like the businesses of Florida."

This is part of a letter sent to legislators from the Council of 100. It was quoted in Bill Cotterell's article in the Tallahassee Democrat 4/9/01, and several legislators confirmed having received this letter.  In effect it says - don't worry about any political fallout from voting for this bill - the only place this is an issue is Tallahassee.

How much pressure, how much manipulation do these guys need to be exert in order to get this bill passed.  It's probably in direct proportion to the amount of money  to be made once it's law.

State workers don't like it. If the rest of Florida knew the truth about it, they wouldn't like it either.  By the time Floridians begin to understand what happened, it will probably be too late.  Here's some wisdom we shouldn't forget about busting up a system:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the king's horses and all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again

And so it came to pass....
